One pound here or two pounds there doesn't seem like much at the time. But those pounds add up and take a toll on your life and self esteem.

Often times people gain weight slowly without realizing how much they've actually gained. They convince themselves that the extra pounds are insignificant and not worth the effort to lose. But two pounds here or there can add up faster than you might think. Over time, those extra pounds show up not only on your scale, but also in your social life. Here are a few hints that you might need to take a closer look at how much your weight has changed over the past few years.

An Inch Off Your Hemline

Has the hemline on your pants shrunk over the past few months? Do you blame your dry cleaner? Guess what, that shrinking hemline could be a sign of the pounds creeping on. You might think those few pounds don’t matter, but if your hemline has shrunk, then your pants are probably tighter than you think!

Your Big Bambi Eyes

A few extra pounds might not go directly to your cheeks, but if those pounds add up, they will eventually show up on your face. When they do, your eyes will seem to disappear! But that squinty smile doesn’t do you justice. Your eyes are the windows to your soul.

Conversations With Random Strangers

Okay, so maybe you’re not the type who likes to make small talk with people at the gym or standing in line at the grocery store. But even the most reclusive folks notice how invisible they become the heavier they get. Yes, you read that right. As you gain weight, you become more invisible! It’s ironic, isn’t it? For some reason, people are more inclined to talk to people of average weight and size. As those extra pounds creep on, you may notice that people are less likely to make eye contact with you on the street and are less likely to make small talk with you at the grocery store. The good news is that taking off a few pounds could also bring you back into the limelight and encourage people to say “hello.”

Options In Bed

As those extra pounds add up, you might find yourself more reluctant to do anything but lie on your back. Gravity is a heavy gal’s best friend (… unless, of course, you are also big breasted, in which case you have quite a dilemma). But think of all the great positions you are missing out on because you are worried about putting your expanding belly front and center. Imagine what you could do if you weren’t afraid of what he might think of your thighs. The possibilities are endless. Ignoring those extra pounds will only hold you back!

The Potential To Sit In The Back Seat

Have you noticed that when you catch a ride with friends and you’re the fifth person in a five passenger car, you always get to ride shotgun even though you didn’t call it? That might be a hint that perhaps those extra pounds have gotten out of control. After all, why are your friends so eager to give you the front seat? Could it be that they are worried about their own comfort if they are forced to share space with your expanded backside? Even if you secretly enjoy the comfort of that shotgun seat, take the hint and take a look at your weight. How does your weight today compare to where you were a year ago? Six months ago?

It is easy to ignore those extra pounds when they creep on one or two at a time. But eventually they add up and take a toll on your health and self-esteem. If your weight gain is slow, you may not even notice the effect. However, the negative effects of weight gain are serious and well documented. It is important to monitor your weight on a regular basis and take every increase seriously. It is much easier to lose a few pounds than it is to lose 20 or even 40 pounds. Don’t let your weight gain get out of control. Even if you don’t weigh yourself on a regular basis, pay attention to the other signs of gain such as your hemline. Then, if you notice a change, take immediate steps to remedy the problem. You deserve to be seen at your very best!
